Introduction to Triangular Coils

Triangular coils are made by winding wires in a triangular (commonly an equilateral triangle, but also irregular triangles such as isosceles and right angles) trajectory. With their unique geometric shape, they are suitable for narrow Spaces or local magnetic field requirements and are commonly used in small electronic devices and special scenarios.


I. Basic Structure

Conductor: The core is enameled copper wire (mainly thin diameter, suitable for winding at triangular corners), with an insulating coating on the surface to prevent short circuits in adjacent wires. In some high-frequency scenarios, silver wire is used to enhance the conductivity efficiency.


Support frame: Mostly triangular plastic, ceramic or ferrite frames, providing winding support for wires and fixing the triangular shape. There are also hollow triangular coils, which maintain their shape through the insulation and arrangement of the wires themselves.


Lead-out end: Wires extend from both ends of the coil. After removing local insulation, they are used to connect the circuit to ensure safe conduction with other components.


Ii. Core Features

Small space occupation: The acute Angle structure of the triangle can be embedded in the corners and narrow gaps of the equipment and other irregular Spaces. Compared with circular and square coils, it saves more installation space and is suitable for small-sized equipment.


Strong magnetic field concentration: When current passes through, the magnetic field mainly gathers in the internal and peripheral local areas of the triangle, making it suitable for scenarios that require directional and concentrated magnetic fields, such as local magnetic excitation and micro-sensing.


The processing needs to be adapted to the corners: During winding, the arrangement of the wires at the three corners of the triangle must be precisely controlled to avoid accumulation or loosening. Usually, dedicated winding equipment is used to ensure a regular shape.


Iii. Main Uses

Micro electronic components: such as small inductors and micro relay coils, taking advantage of their small size, are suitable for the internal layout of compact devices like headphones and smartwatches.


Special sensing equipment: In local magnetic field sensors and eddy current testing probes, the concentrated magnetic field of the triangular coil can enhance the detection sensitivity, especially suitable for defect detection in narrow areas (such as pipe welds).


Local energy transmission: In small wireless charging modules (such as charging for micro medical devices), triangular coils can be attached to the irregular surface of the device to achieve local energy coupling.


Iv. Differences from Coils of Other Shapes

Compared with circular coils, triangular coils have a more concentrated magnetic field but slightly weaker uniformity, and a higher space utilization rate, making them suitable for installation with small gaps.


Compared with square coils, triangular corners are more flexible and can adapt to narrower acute corner Spaces. However, during winding, the wires at the corners are prone to force and require enhanced insulation protection.
